Position Overview:

The Traveling Data Lead Technician is responsible for leading and executing low-voltage and structured cabling installations across multiple job sites throughout the region or nation. This role plays a key part in ensuring the data portion of each project is completed accurately, efficiently, and according to scope. The Data Lead Tech is expected to represent the company professionally while on the road, maintain communication with the office, and ensure quality control across all traveling projects.

Key Responsibilities:

Travel-Based Project Execution

• Travel to assigned job sites (regional or national) for short- or long-term deployments.

• Install, terminate, label, and test low-voltage/data cabling including Cat5e, Cat6, fiber optic, and coax.

• Install server racks, patch panels, cable trays, and other infrastructure components.

• Lead on-site completion of assigned data scope for remodels, rollouts, and new construction projects.

Site Leadership & Communication

• Act as the on-site lead for all data-related work, coordinating with general contractors, store contacts, and internal teams.

• Provide direction to traveling apprentices or local labor as needed.

• Maintain consistent communication with the office regarding job progress, material needs, scope issues, and project timelines.

• Submit end-of-day reports and jobsite photos using company systems.

Documentation & Quality Control

• Ensure all cable is installed per plan and labeled accurately.

• Complete and upload redlines, test results, and any required documentation daily.

• Maintain jobsite standards and client expectations across all scopes.

• Ensure equipment and terminations meet company and industry standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI).

Material & Tool Readiness

• Review project materials prior to travel; confirm all tools and materials are on hand before departing.

• Report any missing items or scope discrepancies before mobilization.

• Maintain the condition and security of all assigned tools, testers, and jobsite gear during travel.

Professionalism & Safety

• Maintain a clean, professional appearance and uphold company reputation at all client locations.

• Comply with all jobsite safety procedures, both internal and external.

• Ensure work is completed neatly, efficiently, and safely, and leave sites in clean condition.

Travel Expectations:

• Willingness to travel frequently for multiple nights/week at a time, including out-of-state jobs.

• Travel typically includes hotel stays and per diem as applicable.

• Must be flexible with work hours and jobsite scheduling based on project needs.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Structured cabling/low-voltage installation experience.

• Strong leadership skills with experience managing jobs independently or as a lead.

• Proficiency in cable installation, testing (Fluke or similar), labeling, and documentation.

• Ability to read and follow blueprints, scope sheets, and project plans.

• Excellent communication and time management skills.

• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regionally or nationally.

• Must be able to lift 50+ lbs and work on ladders or lifts.
