LIFEGUARD I (SEASONAL) – SANTA CRUZ DISTRICT / SAN MATEO COAST SECTOR / HALF MOON BAY STATE BEACH
“Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKs program. (Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program).” The reporting location for this position is Half Moon Bay State Beach. This position will work under the supervision of the State Park Peace Officer Supervisor I (Lifeguard). This uniformed position will work with other seasonal lifeguard employees within an operational group and reports to a Permanent Lifeguard or Lifeguard Supervisor. As part of a self-directed work team, the incumbents work with other lifeguards and park personnel to provide aquatic safety to the public. The incumbent shall be in good physical strength and endurance and have the willingness to work weekends and holidays. Lifeguard I shall perform various unskilled tasks necessary to ensure that public health and safety standards are maintained including detecting hazardous ocean conditions, rendering assistance to persons and vessels in distress in the water, reporting hazards, dispatching responsibilities, providing Public Safety-First Aid care, CPR, communicable diseases prevention. Operate Code 3-equipped vehicles and rescue equipment. Enforce State Park rules and provide public safety-first aid. Develops leadership qualities through Team Building and Empowerment to provide a safe, professional, high quality recreational opportunity for the park visitor. Promote workplace safety and follow established protocols. Communicate with supervisors and adhere to the district’s operations handbook and District Polices. Complete documentation such as patrol logs, rescue reports, time sheets, and equipment checklists. Manage tasks in line with the seasonal lifeguard expenditure plan. Assist with the repair and maintenance of lifeguard equipment and facilities. Protect Park resources and ensure a high-quality visitor experience. Provide educational programs and community outreach. This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible. The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment. This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. Availability in spring and fall weekends, and 4-5 days a week in the summer. Outdoor work in various weather conditions
Physical strength, endurance, and agility necessary to perform lifesaving activities; visual acuity and hearing in each ear sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job. May require prolonged standing and walking. Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, water, and noise may occur.
May require lifting, pushing, or pulling heavy equipment.
