Job Description

Overview The Environmental Sustainability Coordinator plays a vital role in developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive waste management and waste sustainability program across the Alaska Native Medical Center accredited campus. This position is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, optimizing waste stream operations, and supporting cost-effective, sustainable disposal practices for Regulated Medical Waste (RMW), general waste, pharmaceutical waste, chemotherapy waste, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste. The Coordinator collaborates with clinical, facilities, supply chain, and safety teams to optimize the organization’s waste streams. Responsibilities Operate, monitor, and maintain the Sani-Pak waste processing machine per manufacturer guidelines. Coordinate daily operations and provide subject matter guidance to contract managers related to regulated medical waste, municipal solid waste, pharmaceutical, chemotherapy, and hazardous materials waste streams. Develop, maintain, and audit internal policies and procedures to ensure proper handling, segregation, storage, and labeling of all waste categories. Maintain documentation for manifests, shipping records, incident logs, and annual reporting. Lead and support internal audits, risk assessments, and compliance inspections. Develop and deliver waste management training to clinical and non-clinical staff to ensure proper waste segregation and handling. Collaborate with Safety and Emergency Management teams to integrate hazardous waste response into training and preparedness efforts. Monitor and manage waste-related budgets; identify cost savings through service optimization, volume reduction, and vendor performance review. Analyze waste generation trends and develop key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress and identify improvement opportunities. Lead or support initiatives focused on waste minimization, recycling, and material reuse. Handle and process regulated medical waste (RMW) in accordance with hospital procedures and applicable state/federal regulations. Ensure the sanitation waste room is clean, organized, and compliant with infection control standards. Coordinate with EVS staff and clinical departments for waste pickup and drop-off schedules. Ensure personal protective equipment (PPE) and spill kits are stocked and accessible. Assist Safety or EVS leadership with compiling monthly waste or sustainability metrics. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of medical, hazardous, and pharmaceutical waste regulations. Knowledge of DOT regulations. Ability to develop policies, procedures, and training materials. Skill in data analysis and reporting. Effective communicator with ability to work across departments and teams. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Minimum Education Qualification Associates’ degree in environmental science, safety, or related field. Progressively responsible professional work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education. Minimum Experience Qualification Non - supervisory – Two (2) years of work experience. Minimum Certification Qualification Must possess and maintain a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License. Preferred Education Qualification Bachelors’ degree in environmental science, safety, or related field. Progressively responsible professional work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education. Preferred Experience Qualification Non - supervisory - Four (4) years of work experience. Preferred Certification Qualification AHE Certified Health Care Environmental Services Technician (CHEST); CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager); Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Certification; RCRA Hazardous Waste Management Certification; DOT Hazardous Materials Shipping Certification. Additional Requirements Depending on the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.
