Job Description

The City of Bessemer is seeking qualified Arborists with comprehensive experience in tree care operations, including planting, trimming, insect and disease control, and removal of tree limbs and debris. Arborists will utilize various hand tools and equipment to maintain the health and safety of trees and shrubs. Responsibilities include responding to public concerns about potentially hazardous situations, such as low-hanging branches and fallen trees, requiring effective communication and excellent customer service skills. The role involves working at heights using a bucket truck or ladder to access high limbs. Arborists operate independently, receiving assignments from supervisors and adhering to safety guidelines and industry best practices. Typical job duties include planting trees using various hand tools, providing education to local schools, preparing information about the importance of planting trees, examining and maintaining equipment, conducting tree removal and trimming at city or county property safely, coordinating work at a work site, ensuring worksite cleanliness, operating aerial lifts and larger chain saws, and reviewing work orders to determine job site tasks. The job involves significant physical exertion including lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, often lifting items over 50 lbs. Work is primarily outdoors at roadways, parks, and residential areas, frequently at heights over 45 feet using a bucket truck, and involves use of power tools such as saws and trimmers.
