College/Department Information

The Medical College of Georgia is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 260 students per class. The educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provides about 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to more than 500 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.

Job Summary

This position will assist with the daily operations of the Sickle Cell Center Laboratory by supporting the efforts of the Newborn Screening program, perform HPLC and other tests as needed for clinical support, assist with quality control procedures, assist with management of equipment and supply inventory, and perform specialized tests required for ongoing research projects. This position will assist the Laboratory Director as needed in the daily administrative functions of the lab. This position will also assist with various Research programs and perform cell cultures, immunofluorescence experiments, western blots, DNA/RNA isolations, PCR's and gene sequencing. This position will also provide assistance in several other key experiments to aid the generation of data for publication and submit competitive grant application.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Perform Cation exchange HPLC and Reverse Ph HPLC analyses for support of the newborn screening program as well as other diagnostic clinical and research support.

Receive samples in the lab and process Research samples for hemoglobinopathy testing. Maintain database of specimens received and tracking of those specimens until all requested tests are performed; maintain all 20% repository samples in working order, including serum, urine, and DNA samples; assist with data collection for various statistical analysis.

Assist with development and maintenance of quality control measures; prepare for CAP and CUA inspections; 10% assist with preparation of reports.

Assist with daily operations of the lab such as answering phones, filing, and transporting items around campus.

Perform specialized tests required for ongoing research projects, as needed including DNA based analyses,cell cultures, immunofluorescence experiments and western blots.

Perform preventative maintenance on equipment.

All other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.

OR

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.

Some previous experience with social/behavioral science (public health) research is desirable.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Two years experience as Research Assistant in high complexity clinical laboratory; experience in HPLC, molecular methods and cell culture preferred.

Salary: $17.88/hourly

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
