Job Description

POSITION CONCEPT :

The individual who holds this position plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order. They shall be responsible for the efficient performance of required duties in conformance with the rules, regulations, and policies of the department. They must exercise authority consistently with the obligations imposed by the oath of office. This position requires the individual to possess good communication and community awareness skills, as the public looks to them for guidance and assistance for all calls for service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The most important and essential job duty of this position is attitude and includes the following: getting along with co-workers, being respectful to members of the community, making sure all employees under his/her command are working together as a team and functioning under pressure. Other duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide public safety by maintaining order, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.
  • Testify in court to present evidence or act as a witness in traffic, civil, and criminal cases.
  • Monitor, note, report, and investigate suspicious people and situations, safety hazards, and unusual activities in designated patrol areas.
  • Conduct through investigations of all offenses and incidents within his/her area of assignment and scope of activity. He/she shall collect evidence and record facts that will aid in identification, apprehension and prosecution of offenders and the recovery of property.
  • Respond to situations/complaints brought to his/her attention while during routine patrol or assigned by a dispatcher.
  • Render first aid to people who are seriously ill or injured; assist people with special needs, people who are lost or other people in need of any assistance.
  • He/she will always be available for duty in the event of emergency situations including but not limited to natural, industrial, vehicle, marine, aircraft, medical and agricultural disasters.
  • Participates in special operations, directed patrols, & community policing initiatives as directed by Patrol Commander

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Knowledgeable of all federal, state and local laws pertaining to law enforcement
  • Knowledgeable of St. Martin Parish geography and roadways
  • Knowledgeable of all radio and signal codes
  • Proficient in both routine and pursuit driving of patrol vehicles
  • Working knowledge of computer programs

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Graduation from an approved P.O. S.T. Academy (Basic Law Enforcement Academy)

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • 12-hour shifts - Alternating
  • Employee is required to work flexible hours when and if needed. In some circumstances employee may be subject to call-out 24 hours a day

LANGUAGE AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to read and comprehend reports and manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, command staff and the general public – in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics
  • Ability to write concise and well-structured reports using proper grammar

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to deal with situations requiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness and judgement
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
  • Ability to supervise the activity of a courtroom and be able to maintain order with tact and diplomacy

The employee must maintain good physical health. They must be able to run, walk, stand, sit, and/or crawl for extended periods of time. They must be able to handle people and/or equipment over 100 pounds.

BENEFITS:

The starting pay for a P.O.S.T. certified Patrol Deputy is –

$46,184.40 (this includes SSP)

$21.15PH - We get paid bi-weekly.

Health – premium paid by office for the employee. (Insurance is with UnitedHealthcare and has a $500 deductible. Not a co-pay plan)

Dependents can be covered but the employee are responsible and pay premiums.

Dental and Vision – these insurances are offered. Employee can waive coverage or elect the insurance and pay premiums for themselves and spouse/kids. 

Life insurance - is 2.5 x annual salary. So, for this position; life policy of $115,461.00

Each family member (spouse & any children under 26 years old) has a $10,000 life policy paid for by the Sheriff's Office.

Pension – Sheriff's office here contributes the 11.5% to our pension in addition to 3% of our required employee contribution.

Employee puts in 7.25% instead of 10.25% (sheriff pays 3% of ours as stated above)

Deferred Comp – optional savings. This would be in addition to our Pension.

Vacation – new employee accrues 3.69 hours on each paycheck of vacation leave. Allowed to carry over 65 hours into the new year.

Policy states that a new employee must wait 6 months after hire date to use vacation leave, unless exception made by supervisor of dept.

Once an employee reaches their 10-year anniversary the vacation accrual increases to 4.62 per paycheck.

Sick - new employee accrues 3.69 hours each paycheck of sick leave. This balance rolls over year to year. We do not lose the time; it continues to accumulate.
