Job Description

Work Hours: 40-50 hours per week
FLSA: Nonexempt, Hourly

Position Summary:  Works under supervision, performs a variety of tasks at project locations.  Safety and controlled operation of equipment are the top priorities and responsibilities of operators on earthwork, infrastructure, and renovation projects.

Physical Requirements:
  1. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  2. Ability to grasp, reach for, handle, and manipulate objects.
  3. Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  4. Climb ladders.
  5. Kneel, crouch, and reach to perform daily equipment inspections and to perform basic equipment maintenance.
  6. See (naturally or with correction).
  7. Hear (naturally or with correction).
  8. Be physically able to work safely and perform assigned tasks and operate controls for up to 12 hours in hot, cold, or generally poor weather conditions.
Typical Responsibilities:
  1. Assist other workers on site to safely and productively move the project forward.
  2. Perform work duties to install aggregates, pipe, fabric, erosion control measures and any other necessary assigned work.
  3. Load, unload, lift, carry and hold materials, machinery, tools, and supplies.  Distribute these items to locations on the project where needed.
  4. Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures to safely operate equipment.
  5. Willingness to learn to operate small equipment when needed if work for the primary piece of equipment is not available.
  6. Prepare the project area for work.  Maintain the construction site and work area in clean and organized condition to eliminate, manage, or minimize hazards.
  7. Inspect equipment each day prior to starting work to ensure it is in good condition.
  8. Clean and maintain equipment daily.  This includes checking fluid levels, confirming functionality of safety features, and greasing the machine and attachments.
  9. Perform work duties assigned by the project superintendent or foreman.
  10. Report malfunctions or unsafe conditions to project superintendent or foreman.
General Requirements, Skills, and Knowledge:
  1. Ability to read and understand training materials, signs, written warnings and directions.
  2. Effective communication skills which allow you to listen, comprehend, and express a variety of directions and job expectations. 
  3. Ask appropriate questions if additional information is needed or expectations are not clear.
  4. Perform a variety of tasks which depend on job needs and schedule. 
  5. Work in a way that emphasizes attention to safety, production, and quality.
Education, Certifications, Licenses, Experience:
  1. Valid driver’s license (Required)
Additional Expectations:
  1. It may be necessary to switch from task to task on a project throughout the day.  We need our operators to work well with others and be willing to work where needed. 
  2. Willingness to travel.  It may be necessary to travel according to the work available at different times of the year depending on project needs.
