DIRECT HIRE: A fantastic opportunity for an experienced Dock Master in Ketchikan, AK, with a company that excels at specialized shipbuilding, ship repair, and handling important, complex projects in support of energy generation, our nations infrastructure, and national defense.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The position provides a safe operating environment by directing installation, maintenance, and repairs of machines, tools, equipment, and utility systems, and contributing to project production work completion and planning for docking and undocking of vessels while assuring ship and dry dock safety. The individual will establish department goals, policies, and departmental procedures. Ketchikans Dockmaster/Facility Manager is a multifaceted role that encompasses acting as the Facility Manager, Dockmaster, Security Manager, and Master Rigger.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for care of company assets with the goal of maximizing shareholder value. Determine facility repair priorities. Plan and direct repairs, preventive maintenance, and equipment installation/relocations.
  2. Plan and lay out docking and undocking activities; perform stability calculations; prepare and lay out blocks; gather and maintain weight logs and docking plans.
  3. Perform as Preventive Maintenance leader and oversee PM team by reviewing manning, schedules, tasks, spot checks, and timely feedback.
  4. Support product and process improvement by reviewing new plans, discussing equipment needs and modifications with interested parties, management, and coordinating activities of facilities and docking staff.
  5. Responsible for protecting employees and visitors by maintaining a safe and clean dock and working environment.
  6. Work with Manager of Environmental/Occupational Safety and Health to sustain compliance with regulatory agency requirements.
  7. Achieve financial objectives by managing staffing levels and material.
  8. As Superintendent, direct the completion of project work through the hourly craft employees. Coordinate tasks for each job among customers, contract administrators, and craft workers and revise daily/weekly schedules as needed.
  9. Design and plan dockings in CAD.
  10. Assume total responsibility for vessel, dry dock, adjacent facilities, and personnel during dry docking operations.
  11. Coordinate & supervise the work of employees assigned to specific dockings and undockings.
  12. Train employees to improve knowledge of docking processes.
  13. Administer all dry docking paperwork, tests, and inspections, including safety certification of dry docks.
  14. Track, report, and execute annual compliance items such as Crane certifications, backflow preventers, fire systems, etc.
  15. Ensure facility is fully operational with all utilities functioning properly.
  16. Responsible for all rolling stock and machinery maintenance and repairs in the facility.
  17. Schedule and supervise maintenance repair work and assist with checking installation and servicing building equipment.
  18. Maintain ongoing communication with contractors, regulatory bodies, clients, and team.
  19. Investigate new opportunities for energy/utility conservation and recycling.
  20. Identify facility and dry docks preventative and corrective maintenance requirements for enhanced productivity.
  21. Responsible for developing budgets for the annual Facilities Business Plan including Maintenance & Repair, Dry Docks, and Yard Services.
  22. Control budgets for security operations and monitor expenses.
  23. Recruit, train, and supervise security personnel.
  24. Maintain security checkpoints.
  25. Perform security process evaluations and inspections.
  26. Must be able to monitor surveillance systems and respond to emergency situations at any time.
  27. Perform as manager of all crane picks, heavy lift picks, critical lift picks, and major bull rigging operations.
  28. Supervise the organization and management of all heavy rigging equipment.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written for constant interaction with all departments and employee levels and outside customers.
  2. Knowledge of marine-related equipment, ship repair/construction techniques, and sequencing of ship repair activities, and shipyard safety practices.
  3. Ability to lead, manage, and motivate employees in a production environment.
  4. Ability to develop and implement strategic plans.
  5. Must have the analytical ability to research problem areas and special requests.
  6. Must be a well-organized, detail, and customer-oriented self-starter.
  7. Ability to read and comprehend work specifications, work orders, blueprints, contracts, and technical publications.
  8. Ability to handle competing priorities and deadlines effectively and respond well to last-minute, high-priority, time-sensitive projects.
  9. Must be able to schedule, direct, and organize work within a diverse department and coordinate work with other departments to maintain efficiency.
  10. Ability to react and perform in emergency situations.
  11. Knowledge of accounting and cost accounting systems, material and procurement systems, and data processing systems.
  12. Ability to read and interpret repair specifications, blueprints, marine repair/shipyard professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations.
  13. Ability to use PC and software applications such as Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, and database programs.
  14. Knowledge of OSHA and other environmental regulations.
  15. Must have thorough knowledge of shipyard production procedures, government regulations, craft jurisdictions, ship repair methods, and administrative procedures.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  1. High School Diploma or GED Certificate is required.
  2. BA degree in business or engineering or equivalent experience is preferred.
  3. Minimum 10 years increasingly responsible experience in a shipyard or plant engineering environment in the marine industry.
  4. Minimum 5 years increasingly responsible managerial experience with 3 years supervisory experience.
  5. Minimum 5 years of experience with Drydocking operations.
  6. Specific experience and knowledge of industrial equipment, cranes, and plant utilities.
  7. Must maintain professional and technical knowledge.
  8. Experience working with ship superintendents, port engineers, craft supervisors, and department managers.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:

May require Naval certifications to perform docking work for Naval vessels.
